Sassy

Sassy was a tarot reader and spiritualist that I met during the protest. She sat out on a blanket surrounded by candles and flowers and her biggest goal was to spread positivity. She believed that nothing could be achieved if everyone’s mindsets were depleted and undernourished. Read her interview below.

Sassy Interview Transcript

T: Okay, so what’s your name?

S: I am Sassy.

T: Hi Sassy, my name’s Tyree. I’m a Denver artist. I just want to get to know you a little bit better, so just tell me a little bit of besides the obvious, why are you out here tonight?

S: Alright, so I’m out here today because I thought that I wanted to spread a lot of positivity and love and light into the world. I just feel like with all the injustices going on and all the people out here protesting – like we’ve been in the house for a long time – like there’s already a lot of built up energy just from like Corona and all the injustices going on. So there are a lot of people who are coming to these protests just really angry and full of hate. And even if you’re not angry and full of hate, it’s easy to pick up on their energy when you’re out here right? So we decided to come out here and spread good vibes because it’s so easy to get caught up in the negativity of the crowd. We’re out here giving out sage, giving out crystals, giving out words of affirmations. We have aloe Vera, I don’t even know what we’re using it for, but we have it. We have our altar out, people are giving flowers we’re burning candles just because we’ve seen that through the last five days being out here, we’ve had a bigger impact on people sitting here talking, saging, getting to know them than we have being in the middle of the crowd chanting and you know marching… because that’s nice, but what are we doing beyond that to heal the people. Because we need healing right now. We don’t need—yeah we need this, like get it out – we need the protest you need to come out here and chant because I had to do it too, but what are we doing beyond that because anger hasn’t gotten us anywhere. So how are we healing ourselves so that we can move forward? Because in order to move forward it starts with healing. Because we can’t think about how we’re going to change the problem if we’re not level headed and this is how we start to get level headed. We need to ground ourselves, we need to spread peace, love and light. Because if you’re thinking clearly it’s easier for us to get to a solution.

T: yes! I love that!

S: Thank you!

T: (In reference to her tarot readings) Have you found that people who come here leave feeling different or have you had a lot of monumental experiences, not just with me but…

S: yes, we’ve just been like the more and more we’re out here. The more we’re starting to attract broken souls. And not broken as in like people who really need messages from us. And then we have people who are like “I smelled you!” and we’re like “come over!” but then we have people who are like “oh my gosh there’s sage I have to go away!” and we’re like “no! You need to be over here because OF the sage! You can’t run away from it because it’s obviously something you need!” Right? Um, but we just notice that we have more people gravitating towards us the longer and longer we’re out here. There’s this girl, I learned how to read cards from here. Her name is Shonetta – Shonetta’s Devine Intuition and she always says your vibe attracts your tribe. So I think we’re sitting out here giving good vibes and that’s literally what we are attracting like, I’ve had so many people hit me up on Sassy’s page and say “It was great meeting you, I feel so healed after being with you.” Like, there was a girl walking by crying and I stopped her and I hugged her, I hugged her for five minutes. And she DM’ed me and she was like “Thank you for that, because that helped me not lose why I was out here. And it helped me [not] have anger.” Because there are people who aren’t out here for the right purpose and they’re spreading that hate. And it’s easy to like, give that hate to somebody. And the reason that they’re out here no longer becomes what they originally came out here for. So we’re just really out here to remind people why we came out here, we came out here to peacefully protest.

T: That’s crazy because that’s exactly what I was saying. For a while I felt like I had lost wanting to be here, my reasoning for being here and I think it’s so amazing that you guys are out here showing people healing and showing them the way back to why we’re here. Like, let’s not be violent, let’s not do any of that stuff. And, the interviews are short so I guess my last question to you is going to be how did you know that this was something that you wanted to do for people? Is this just something that you always felt compelled to do, or is this something that you felt like you needed to do here today?

S: I think in general just with my spirituality, I’ve always been like called to help people. I always help people through hard situations but as I’ve gotten older I’ve realized that I have gifts that I have to share with the world. And even though I don’t want to sometimes, I feel like I’m being pushed more and more and more to do that. Um, and I have been talking about since January I’ve wanted to get myself out there more on my tarot readings and I wanted to start showing people what I’m doing, spreading my messages and the spirit literally pushed me to come out here and do it. It’s not something that I wanted to necessarily do, it’s something that I feel like I had no choice but to do. I had to be out here. I felt, I was out here since it started and I felt so nasty that first couple of days after protesting. I went home depleted, I felt sick.

T: Oh my god! Me too!

S: I just, it gave me anxiety, it made me a little bit depressed I will say that out loud. Like it’s so much energy out here. And like, when we came out here and did this, I felt rejuvenated, I felt replenished afterwards. So I knew that this was how I needed to be protesting because when I was out there marching and chanting I didn’t feel good afterwards. But when I’m sitting here talking to people, saging the crowd as they walk by, giving out readings, giving out crystals. I know that I’m having an impact on people more than I am when I’m in that crowd. So, I think that this has been replenishing my soul and that’s why I keep coming out here every day.

T: Do you think it’s important to emphasize that everybody protest in their own way?

S: Yeah! I mean, I don’t agree with the looting but I understand why it’s going on. I don’t agree with some of the violent things that are going on, but I understand why it’s going on. I just think that we all have our own ways of dealing with things, I would preach my way over other peoples’ way! Peace over violence of course! But I don’t judge them, I don’t judge. People are fed up and they’re tired and they’re tired of being tired. And that’s what happens when people are tired of being tired with stuff that is going on in our world right now. So, this is why we’re out here doing this so people can stop being tired of being tired! Like, we’re trying to spread those vibes so that people don’t have those feelings no more, so that they’re happy. I hope that when you walk away today that you don’t feel depleted when you go home.

T: That was an issue that I had was going home and feeling so tired and not wanted to come back. And this helped me so much I just wanted to say thank you!

S: Thank you! We’re out here everyday, and we’re asking people to come out here with us. If you want to come out here with us then come. We’ve gotten so many people to donate stuff, we have her like she donated her services to us today because she understood what we were doing. So if you ever want to just come out here and sit with us, we’re always out here. We just want people to come and be a part of our movement and get our word out because like I said we preach peach over violence. Love and light is more important than all that other stuff.

T: I love that. Thank you! Thank you for doing this.
